Affecting Food Policy

I hope MUAN plays an historic role in reserving as much of our vacant land in old city neighborhoods for community farm and garden experiments. It would be nice to find people on the common council who would make this one of their career projects.

lets put them there!!
as a Green Party member this very issue makes me want to run for council.
but first i’d have to move out of Wauwatosa again.
in due time this Milwaukee will be green with food as well as parks, an idea who’s time is come will be. Developers will always have thier choice of lands until we use the ballot to voice our needs. It’s only a matter of time…

let’s keep growing — 22 March 2008, 19:50

Hi All, The idea of reserving vacant land in the older parts of the city is a must. Reserved use for urban agriculture projects to help feed this city is of the utmost import. Our Milwaukee is growing, or creeping outward, and our greenspaces or greenbelts are shrinking at an alarming rate. As forward thinkers, isn’t it necessary that we try to earmark or protect some of these lands today for use tomorow? I’m watching farmland being eaten up by new housing and retail strips. Everytime I drive around the perimeter of this city, I find new construction and less farmland. Urban agriculture includes peri-urban food production, and I hope that we can be as great planners as Milwaukee’s forefather were. Realizing that a farmer can make more money selling his land for development than by raising crops, I’m wondering if this area has a plan to protect our local food production? Just a question, would like to hear some feedback on the issue.

concerned about food sources — 07 June 2008, 08:49

I am interested in keeping a few hens for eggs in Milwaukee. Does anyone have thoughts on the pros/cons of keeping a small number of poultry (primarily for eggs) in an urban setting?
