The Land Tenure committee met in April. They decided to invite the city in to discuss the 30th Street Corridor and what is available for land there. The next meeting is May 29th at 3:00pm at the Milwaukee Consortium at MUG’s office. The city wants to know who wants land and how much is needed.
Monthly Presentations:Discussion and requests for presentation for each monthly meeting.
June:Venice Williams (Alice’s garden,Seed Folks, New Orleans urban ag project and others)
Other offers that will will be presented: The Domes, ALL-TUG school and community garden, Shorewood school garden. Please contact Mary Lou Lamonda, if you want to present over the next 6 months.
“Teutonia Urban Garden (TUG)” the 5,000 gallon cistern was just put in place. Ron mentioned that the city might change its policy on how water from rooftop runoff can be used for gardens, without going through a treatment, as long as it kept out of the indoor plumbing.
Presentation by Milwaukee Urban Gardens
MUG is a land trust organization committed to creating gardens and preserving urban green space. They did a wonderful presentation on all of the gardens they are involved in. The most important thing that they stressed : Find the folks who want to garden, before you look for the land. Having the land first and finding the people to use it and plan for it is a much more difficult prospect.
In addition to helping create gardens and holding land in trust, they have numerous programs for kids and adults throughout the year. Please check out their website for current events. They can always use volunteers, and of course money for land, crops, tools, etc. http://www.milwaukeeurbangardens.org/
